MUSKEGON — Muskegon Mona Shores girls basketball team defeated Shelby, 46-29 in a non-conference game in Muskegon Tuesday night.

After a close first half, which saw Mona Shores lead by only nine points at the break, the Sailors pulled away from the Tigers in the second half.

Mona Shores led only 10-4 at the end of the first quarter, and outscored the Tigers 10-7 in the second for a 20-11 halftime edge.

But the second half was a different story. Mona Shores doubled up on the Tigers in the third quarter, 12-6 and extended its lead to 32-17 going into the fourth. Mona Shores outscored the Tigers, 15-12 in the final eight minutes.

“The girls struggled to executing our offense, and we committed too many unforced turnovers to ever take control,”Shelby coach Sarah Wolting said. “We’ve got to buckle down, and offensively everyone needs to improve.”

Ali Phillips paced Mona Shores with a game-high 17 points, while Olivia Sobczak contributed 10, Jenna Tierman added seven and Khaleeya Cook six.

Kendall Zoulek led the Tigers with 14 points, two assists and two steals. Aubrey Klotz added six rebounds and four assists.

Shelby fell to 4-5 for the season and is next scheduled to resume West Michigan Conference action at co-leader Montague on Thursday night.

Mona Shores improved to 5-1 with its fourth straight win, and next plays at Grand Rapids Union on Friday night.
