MUSKEGON — It was a tight game until the fourth quarter, when Reeths-Puffer put the defensive clamps down on Muskegon and pulled off a 47-35 girls basketball victory Tuesday night in an O-K Green matchup.

The win snapped Muskegon’s five-game winning streak, and lifted Reeths-Puffer into a tie with the Big Reds and Mona Shores for first place in the conference as all are at 5-1.

Reeths-Puffer squeezed into a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, and then outscored the Big Reds, 13-8 in the second to build a 27-21 halftime advantage.

The Big Reds outscored the Rockets, 11-10 in the third quarter and narrowed the score to 37-33 entering the fourth quarter. But the Rockets pulled away with a 10-3 edge in the final eight minutes.

Leading the scoring for the Rockets were Sophia Hekkema with 14 points and Arrionna Williams with 13. Ariel Walker chipped in with nine, Brooklyn Thomas with six and Megan Barnes with five. The Rockets made four 3-point shots, one each by Barnes, Williams, Hekkema and Walker.  

Hekkema also had eight rebounds. Williams had five steals and three assists.

Jamya Robinson led the Big Reds in scoring with 10 points, Lyana Lenoix Brooks added seven and Breanna Gamble Jones five.

Brooks also had five rebounds and two blocks.

Reeths-Puffer improved to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the league. The Rockets are next scheduled travel to play Grand Rapids Union on Friday night.

The Big Reds fell to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference. They will next be in action Friday when they host Zeeland East.
