WHITEHALL — A big fourth quarter propelled the Mason County Central girls basketball team past Whitehall, 41-35 at Whitehall in a West Michigan Conference game on Tuesday night.

The Spartans improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Vikings slipped to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the WMC standings.

Each team scored eight points in the first quarter, but the Spartans were able to build as much as a 12-point lead in the second quarter.

Mason County Central outscored the Vikings, 11-4 in the second quarter and went into the halftime break with a seven-point edge, 19-12.

Whitehall scrambled back in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans, 15-7 to take a three-point lead, 29-26 into the fourth quarter.

But, the Spartans made some big shots in the final period to pull ahead. The Spartans finished the period outscoring the Vikings, 15-8 to clinch the win.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Wren Nelson with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Charlie Banks added seven points and five rebounds.

Autumn Ferris scored nine points and hauled down seven rebounds to lead the Vikings. Marissa Strendberg chipped in with six points.

The Spartans are scheduled to host North Muskegon in another conference matchup on Friday, January 4, while the Vikings travel to Shelby in the WMC on Friday evening.
