HOLLAND–The Spring Lake boys basketball team fought valiantly to a double overtime battle against Holland Christian on Friday but a literal last second foul gave the Maroons two shots from the line for the go ahead 56-54 win over the Lakers.

It was a fight from the beginning for the Lakers as the Maroons took a small, short-lived one point lead after one quarter.

The pace was increased a bit with the Lakers buckling down to shoot their way to their own lead with a score of 24-21 at the half.

The Lakers were given no chance to enjoy a sustained lead from the Maroons in the second half. After the third quarter, despite being outscored, the Lakers held a small 35-33 advantage.

Trying to slow down the Maroons’ momentum the Lakers attempted to preserve the lead but the Maroons were able to force overtime with a fourth quarter scoring advantage of 11-9 to knot things at 44-44 and force overtime.

The first overtime was a battle of defense with the two teams holding each other to only two points warranting yet another overtime period.

Neither team could get a step up as time was running out in the second overtime the score was again tied 54-54 with just :06 seconds remaining when a crucial foul was called allowing the Maroons to sink two free throws for the final two point margin of victory.

Porter Saunders led the way for Spring Lake scoring 18 points, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out five assists. Zach Schlepp scored 15 while Eli Morrison added 10 points.

Spring Lake drops to 4-3 with a 2-1 record in the O-K Blue and will be back to action on Tuesday at home against Coopersville.
