SCOTTVILLE — A big first quarter got Whitehall off to a fast start, and the Vikings moved on to turn back a battling Mason County Central boys basketball team, 67-54 in the West Michigan Conference on Friday night.

It was the third straight loss for the hard luck Spartans, and it was the first quarter that put them in comeback mode for the rest of the game.

The Spartans just couldn’t catch up to the Vikings.

Mason County Central produced enough offense in the first period, but the Vikings had a bigger showing with a 27-17 run.

Whitehall really applied the defensive stops in the second quarter, limiting the Spartans to just five points while scoring 14 and bounded into the locker room at the half with a 41-22 lead.

The Spartans couldn’t recover. They outscored the Vikings, 18-15 in the third quarter, but Whitehall still maintained a double figure lead, 56-40 heading into the final period. Whitehall finished off the game with a 18-11 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Cam Thompson paced the Vikings with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Kal Koehler had 12 points and six boards and Kyle Stratton chipped in with 10 points.
The Spartans were led by Will Chye’s 16 points and seven rebounds. Jayden Perrone and Nick Trivisonno each scored eight.

Mason County Central fell to 3-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference. The Spartans’ next action is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 1 at home against Hart.
Whitehall improved its record to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Vikings will see action again on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at Ravenna.
