WHITEHALL — Montague earned a split in West Michigan Conference action Wednesday night on the road, defeating Mason County Central, 54-28 and losing to Hart, 46-29.  

The Wildcats had five wrestlers go 2-0 on the night. They included Jimmy Thommen, Kevin Roll, Landon Askins, Cale Coppess and Tristan Winkleblack.  

Hart finished with a split as well, losing to No. 2-ranked Whitehall, 59-12 after securing second place in the WMC with the win over Montague.  

Jose Chavira, Bryce Johnson, Uriel Vilches-Mendoza, Mason Chu, Guillermo Ortega, Zane Thomas, Leo Guadarrama, Jon Ponce and Ivan Lara all won against Montague.  

Picking up wins against Whitehall were Bryce Jorissen, Mason Cantu and Guadarrama.  

Finishing 2-0 for the Spartans on the night were Zane McCabe at 125 pounds and Hunter Sandford at 112.  

“Zane wrestled really well tonight,” Spartans head coach Trim Kendel said. “He beat a Montague kid that he has never beaten before, and he beat him pretty good.  

“Hunter also just keeps getting better every match. He had great control in the Whitehall match.”  

Also earning wins for the Spartans were Andrew Quinn at 275, Raiden Keefer at 189 and Ethan Horacek at 215.  

Montague is now 3-3 in the conference, and 8-5 overall. The Wildcats next see action at Mona Shores in the GMAA tournament on Saturday.  

The Spartans next compete in a tournament at Mio-AuSable on Saturday.
