NEWAYGO — In a low scoring, defensive struggle the Fremont boys basketball team pulled out a close, 50-45 victory over Newaygo on the road Friday night in the Central State Activities Association Gold.

Jordon McDonald led the way for the Packers with 19 points, and he also grabbed 10 rebounds. Joey DeLong contributed 10 points, had four rebounds, dished out three assists and nabbed two steals.

Gavin Richards finished with eight points and five rebounds.

“I thought our defense was really good all night long, and carried us on a night when we struggled shooting the ball,” Fremont head coach Adam Bowen said.

“We moved the ball well, and our shot selection was good. But, the shots just were not falling. We had a few players missing due to injury and illness, but our guys stepped up and battled hard.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game. Fremont and Newaygo games are usually very competitive, and this was no exception.”

Fremont improved its record to 11-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference with its fourth straight win. The Packers are next scheduled to see action Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Grant.

Newaygo fell to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in the conference. The Lions are next scheduled to see action Tuesday, Feb. 15 at home against Howard City-Tri County.
