COMSTOCK PARK—The Fremont Packers won a tightly contested game and showed resilience throughout in their 51-45 win at Comstock Park.

Fremont started the ballgame leading 9-6 at the end of the first quarter. Their lead shrunk in the second quarter to one as they held a 17-16 halftime lead.

The Packers busted out of the gate to expand their lead to seven early in the third quarter. The score remained as a seven-point advantage at the end of the third quarter 34-27. Fremont controlled the pace down the stretch and sealed the game at the free throw line.

Haley Zerlaut led the charge for the Packers with 22 points, five steals, and five assists. Mia Witte contributed strongly with a double-double including 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Bennett tallied nine points and six rebounds, and Khaila Noordyk grabbed nine rebounds of her own.

Head Coach Wes Zerlaut said this about his team’s performance, “I’m really proud of our kids tonight. We have struggled to win games much of the season, but they have stuck together, continued to get better, and have now won 3 games in a row. We got good contributions from a lot of girls, including some girls that joined us at the end of the JV season and provided good minutes off the bench. I told them after the game I’m not sure which of my feelings is stronger, being proud of them, or being happy for them. Either way, it was a good win. They worked hard, executed the game plan, and deserved it.

Fremont improves to 5-16 on the season and will play Newaygo on Wednesday at 7pm at Comstock Park.

Comstock Park finishes the season with a record of 9-12.
