NEWAYGO — Wyatt Monette and Kevin Erickson scored 38 points between them as the Holton Red Devils won their third straight game, knocking off Newaygo, 54-42 on Tuesday night on the road in non-conference action.

It was a close game throughout the first half, with the Red Devils unable to shake the Lions. Holton led, 21-16 after the first quarter but then was outscored, 11-5 in the second to trail, 27-26 at the half.

But the Red Devils regrouped in the locker room during the break and came out in the third quarter on fire, outscoring the Lions, 17-5 to take a 43-32 lead into the fourth period.

“I thought we played a good game tonight,” Holton head coach Keith Swanson said. “I thought Newaygo also played a good game.

“(Bryce) Decker gave us quite a few problems, but I felt our guys never blinked. They trusted themselves through adversity, and that’s always what you want to see as a coach.”

Wyatt Monette score 23 points to lead the Red Devils and he also added seven rebounds. Kevin Erickson added 15 points and four steals, while Carter Brant dished out five assists.

Decker scored 17 points for Newaygo.

The Red Devils raised their record to 9-2 overall and are next scheduled to play at White Cloud on Friday, Feb. 4.
