SCOTTVILLE — In a defensive struggle, the Whitehall girls basketball team snapped Mason County Central’s six-game winning streak with a low scoring 28-23 victory in the West Michigan Conference in Scottville Thursday night.

After the two teams battled to a 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter and then each scored 10 points in the second period the half ended in a 16-16 tie.

The Spartans then outscored the Vikings, 6-4 in the third quarter to move in front, 22-20 heading into the fourth period. But the Vikings limited the Spartans to one point in the final stanza, while dropping in eight to snare the win.

“I think both teams tonight were a little bit off in their shooting,” Spartans head coach Mike Weinert said. “Both teams played well defensively, really.

“Both teams were playing full court most of the game, and played tough half-court defense. The shots weren’t really falling for either team.

“We let some people get behind us a few times, and they got some layups or drew fouls. I think part of that (for the Spartans) was playing three games in four days.

“But, hand it to Whitehall. They came in and played a tough game.”

Charley Klint scored 11 points to lead all scorers in the game for the Vikings.

Wren Nelson led the Spartans with seven points and she also hauled down 15 rebounds.

The Spartans saw their record dip to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in the conference. Next up for Mason County Central is a trip to North Muskegon on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Whitehall moved its record to 8-11 overall and 6-7 in the WMC. The Vikings are next scheduled to see action Tuesday, Feb. 22 hosting Shelby.
