MCBAIN — Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, and move on in the MHSAA Division 3 district tournament, the Mason County Central Spartans started strong and just got stronger in rolling up a 76-55 victory over Harrison at McBain on Monday night.

The Spartans didn’t show any signs of having tired legs after the long bus ride, jumping on Harrison for a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Harrison struggled to get its offense going against the Spartans defense in the second quarter, but was unable to kick into high gear as Mason County Central enjoyed a 12-9 advantage and went into the halftime break with a 24-16 lead.

“We played better in the second half,” said Spartans head coach Tim Genson. “We got a big third quarter out of a lot of guys. Dakota Sterley came to life in the third and really triggered our offense.

“We had some foul trouble, and were riding some guys on the bench. Dakota stepped up, and with him and other guys, they not only maintained, but expanded our lead.”

Mason County Central’s offense ran smoothly in the third period, and the Spartans outscored Harrison, 25-16 to go into the fourth quarter enjoying a 49-32 lead. The Spartans prevailed, 27-23 in a wild fourth period.

Leading the Spartans was Will Chye with 23 points, and he also hauled down five rebounds and dished out six assists. Jayden Perrone contributed 18 points and ripped down seven rebounds and Sterley finished wtih 12 points. Kolden Myer chipped in with eight points and led with 11 rebounds.

The Spartans improved to 6-14 and advance to play Evart at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night at McBain.
