SPARTA — Sparta’s boys basketball team won its second straight game and punched its ticket to the MHSAA Division 2 district championship game with a 60-51 victory over Grant in the semifinal on Wednesday night at Sparta.

Jax Wilson scored eight points to lead the Spartans to a 17-11 first quarter lead. Lucas Swanson knocked down two 3-point baskets as the Tigers outscored the Spartans, 14-13 in the second period and Sparta took a five-point lead, 30-25 into the half.

Sam Whitmore scored six points in the third period as the Spartans outscored the Tigers, 13-6 and went into the fourth period with a 12-point lead, 43-31. Grant made it close at the end with a 20-17 advantage in the final eight minutes

Wilson led all scorers in the game with 29 points, including an 11 of 12 shooting performance at the free throw line. Whitmore added 11, Joe Roberts eight and Reece Alt seven.

Sawyer Carr paced the Tigers with 13 points, while Seth Schutema added 12 and Lucas Swanson added eight, Zak Barhart six, Austin Whitney and Chase Geers had five apiece and Giovanni Follander two.

Sparta improved to 10-12 and faces Fremont for the district championship on Friday at 7 p.m.

Grant finished the season 11-10.
