SHELBY — Getting off to a fast start, the Shelby boys basketball team rode that momentum to a 66-20 victory over Hesperia at home Thursday night in the final regular season game for both teams.
The Tigers busted loose for a 19-5 advantage in the first quarter. Shelby kept on rolling in the second period, outscoring the Panthers, 23-7 and built a convincing 42-12 lead at the half.
Shelby had a 20-8 advantage in the third quarter and carried a 62-20 cushion into the fourth quarter and then shut the Panthers out, 6-0 in the final eight minutes.
Joseph Hayes torched the Panther defense for 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from behind the 3-point arc. He also dished out five assists and had three steals. Bishop Lee contributed 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He also dished out three assists.
Shelby improved to 12-8 on the season and will open MHSAA district tournament action Wednesday night at Western Michigan Christian.
