FLINT–Something special is brewing with the Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team, and you can feel the electricity in the air.

After having a team breakfast Saturday morning, and then a walkthrough, the Jayhawks had a 45-minute break to get personally ready for the Great Lakes District A Regional final.

The Jayhawks got to Ballenger Fieldhouse at 10:45 a.m. focused and ready for the 12 p.m. tipoff and then took care of business, rolling to a 70-50 victory over the Grand Rapids Community College Raiders.

“I am so excited about what this team has done,” said Jayhawks head coach Jason Cooper. “They have fought through adversity, and came out on top.”

After starting the game with a narrow 18-16 edge at the end of one, the Jayhawks began their pullaway in the second period with a 20-14 edge to extend their lead to eight, 38-30 at the half.

But the big quarter was the third, when the Jayhawks limited the Raiders to just eight points while scoring 16 to stretch their lead out to 16 points, 54-38 going into the fourth. The Jayhawks finished with a 16-12 advantage in the final period.

Four players scored in double figures for the Jayhawks, topped by Calla Miller (Fremont) with 14 points. She also hauled down seven rebounds.

Suzan Sisman (Marselisborg) and Julia Tierman (Mona Shores) tallied 13 apiece, and Tierman also dished out four assists. Mariah Pringle (Brethren) contributed 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out five assists and had four blocked shots.

Also for the Jayhawks, Trina Lewis (Reeths-Puffer) had eight points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Karleigh Jeffries (Whitehall) chipped in six points and 10 rebounds, while Sydney Bol (Fruitport) had four points and two rebounds.

The Jayhawks improve to 24-4 and advance to the National Tournament the week of March 14. The Raiders finished 20-11.
