FLINT — Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team faced Mid-Michigan in regional play Thursday at Flint, and pulled away in the second half for a 68-48 win to advance to the regional finals Saturday against Grand Rapids Community College.

The Jayhawks started out fast, opening up a 19-11 lead on Mid-Michigan at the end of the first quarter. But then the offense stalled, and the Jayhawks were outscored, 13-7 in the second period to lead by just two, 26-24 at the half.

Regrouping during the break, the Jayhawks came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring Mid-Michigan, 22-10 in the third quarter to gain a 48-34 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Jayhawks had a 20-14 advantage in the final period.

“It was a great second half for us,” said Jayhawks head coach Jason Cooper. “We played some good defense to build our lead.”

Leading the Jayhawks were Calla Miller (Fremont) with 20 points as well as four rebounds, Mariah Pringle (Brethren) with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Julia Tierman (Mona Shores) with 11 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.

Also for the Jayhawks Suzan Sisman (Marselisborg) contributed eight points and six rebounds, Trina Lewis (Reeths-Puffer) with six points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Karleigh Jeffries (Whitehall) added seven points, Ashley Richmond (West Catholic) had three and Sydney Bol (Fruitport) added two.

The Jayhawks improved to 23-4 overall, while Mid-Michigan ended its season 20-10.
