SPARTA —Fremont’s boys basketball team defeated Newaygo, 70-40 in a MHSAA Division 2 district semifinal Wednesday night at Sparta.

The Packers got off to a hot start, outscoring the Lions, 17-4 in the first quarter. The Lions just kept going, with a 20-12 advantage in the second period for a 37-16 halftime lead.

The Lions finished the third period with a 15-12 advantage and headed to the fourth quarter with a 52-28 lead. Newaygo outscored the Packers, 19-12 in the final eight minutes.

Fremont knocked down nine 3-point baskets for the game. Joey DeLong had four triples and scored 16 points for the Packers.

Jordon McDonald topped the scoring list with 24 points.

Blake Hanshue had two 3-pointers and scored nine points. Elijah Shears hit two 3-pointers and finished with six points.

Newaygo was led in scoring by Josiah Long with 16 points. Grant Harkness added eight, including two 3-point baskets.

Fremont improved to 14-7 and now faces Sparta in the district championship game Friday night at 7 p.m. at Sparta.
