COMSTOCK PARK–Emmerson Goodin provided a dominate performance for the Lions en route to a 51-17 win over the Fremont Packers on Wednesday evening.

Newaygo powered out to a 27-11 halftime lead. The Lions used a 20-1 third quarter to officially put the game away leading 47-12 at the end of the quarter.

Emmerson Goodin led the Lions with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals. Grace Painter had 10 points and four rebounds. Lily Swinehart added six points and five rebounds.

Haley Zerlaut led the Packers with eight points and Mia Whitte added six. Kaitlyn Bennett and Sydney each had five rebounds.

Newaygo is obviously a very good team,” said Fremont coach Wes Zerlaut. “There is a reason they have won 20 games this season.

We talked a lot about competing on every possession, playing hard on defense, and making them earn all the points they got. I thought we did that.

Our undoing was on the offensive end of the floor tonight. We turned it over way too much, and their half court pressure defense sped us up and forced us into bad shots when we didn’t turn it over.”

Newaygo head coach Nate Thomasma said, “I thought the girls played a pretty good game tonight. We missed some shots in the 2nd quarter, but we settled in and made some buckets in the second half. I thought Painter did a good job offensively in the third quarter to get the momentum going.”

“We got the #1 seed Sparta coming up on Friday so we will have to play our best to compete with them. I am very impressed with how well they play.”

Newaygo improves to 20-1 on the season and will face Sparta in the district championship on Friday.

Fremont finishes the season with a record of 5-17.
