COMSTOCK PARK–Newaygo defeated Sparta 61-49 as the Lions outscored the Spartans by 12 in the fourth quarter.

Jaxi Long and Emmerson Goodin played inspired basketball with terrific performances. Long led the Lions in scoring with 25 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Goodin wasn’t shy either with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Kayla Fisk played some all-important defense having six steals on the night.

After the game, head coach Nathan Thomasma had this to say about his teams’ performance, “Unbelievable performance by their girls tonight. Sparta is a tough team. They are well coached and talented. Our girls were able to withstand a good run by the Spartans in the third quarter.

“In the 4th quarter, our girls made championship plays when it counted. Jaxi and Emmerson were great at making big shots and free throws. Lily also made some big buckets late. Kayla was great as always on defense and really set the pass for us defensively tonight. Grace hit some big shots for us. Our bench gave us minutes and energy throughout the game. It was a great win for the girls and the program. Winning three straight district titles is a difficult accomplishment. These girls work hard, and it has paid off for them.”

Newaygo improves to 21-1 on the season and moves onto the regional semifinals where they will play Spring Lake at Orchard View next Tuesday.
