MCBAIN — Pentwater’s boys basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Wednesday night in a MHSAA Division 4 district semifinal with the undefeated McBain Northern Michigan Christian and came away with a 68-29 loss.

The Comets burned the Falcons for an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pentwater struggled against the Comet defense in the second quarter as well and was outscored 14-4 and trailed, 32-11 at the half.

Pentwater picked up its scoring pace in the third quarter, but couldn’t slow the Comets down and was outscored, 28-11 and headed into the fourth quarter with a 60-22 deficit. The Comets outscored the Falcons 8-7 in the final period.

“The Falcons gave their best efforts tonight, and played a great half-court defense and transition defense,” said Pentwater head coach Ashley Lubera.

“However, the pure athleticism and length of the NMC team proved their level of talent. A huge shoutout to all four seniors on an incredible season.

“Special thanks to everyone in the school and community that supported these amazing men all season.”

Pentwater was led by Will Werkema-Grondsma with 13 points. He also hauled down nine rebounds and had two assists. Campbell Miller dished out four assists and Tyler Plummer-Eisenlohr had three steals.

The Falcons finished the year 8-12.
