GRAND HAVEN—The Grand Haven Buccaneers used a balanced scoring attack on Monday evening in the opening round of the girls basketball district as they got by Grand Rapids Union 63-56 in a game played on the Bucs homecourt.

The remainder of their district action will now shift to Reeths-Puffer High School.

Monday evening the visiting Red Hawks got out to a 17-15 lead after one period of play.

The Buccanners came back with a strong second stanza racking up a 19-8 scoring advantage to take a 34-25 lead into the halftime intermission.

Grand Haven held a slim 18-17 scoring edge over the Red Hawks during the third quarter increasing there lead to 52-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Grand Rapids Union held the upper hand 14-11 during the final eight minutes but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Buccanners who secured the seven point winning margin and will move on to the next round of district action.

Senior center Zoe Spoelman led Grand Haven with a team high 17 points and nine rebounds. Joining her in double figures was senior guard Caydee Constant who tossed in 16 points.

Abbey Klumpel chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds while dishing out seven assists and senior forward Molly Long tosed in eight points go along with a team high 13 rebounds.

Grand Haven improves to 10-11 overall and will face Mona Shores in district action on Wednesday evening at Muskegon Reeths-Puffer in a game slated to begin at 5:30 pm. The Sailors will come into the contest with a 17-3 record.
