SPRING LAKE–The Montague boys basketball team closed out the district opener on Monday evening with a 45-39 win on the road over the Fruitport Trojans on Monday.

It was a battle that saw seven lead changes as the Wildcats scraped by the Trojans in the end.

The first half was tight as Montague had a three-point lead after one quarter (11-8) and went into halftime with a 23-20 advantage.

The Trojans (7-14) battled back in the third quarter and grabbed a 32-31 lead.

The highly competitive fourth quarter saw the Wildcats survive and advance to Wednesday’s district semifinal game.

Fruitport played really hard and made it tough on us, but we were able to hold on at the end to finish out and get the win,” Montague head coach David Osborne said.

Leading the way for the Wildcats (15-6) was Tate Stine with 13 points and five assists while Isaiah Atchison tallied 11 points.

With the win, Montague will take on Oakridge (12-8) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. That game will be played at Spring Lake.
