GRAND RAPIDS–Muskegon Community College men’s baseball team split a doubleheader with Grand Rapids Community College on Sunday, losing the first game 5-4 in the last inning and rebounding for a 9-6 win in the nightcap.

The Jayhawks enjoyed a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after scoring three runs in the sixth, but Grand Rapids rallied to take the win.

Cayden Taylor (Fairfield) toed the rubber for the Jayhawks and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two.

Muskegon out-hit Grand Rapids, 7-6. Nico Verdugo (Sparta) and Grayson Makranyi (Flushing) each went 3-for-4 to lead the Jayhawks.

In the second game, the score was tied 5-5 with the Jayhawks batting in the top of the sixth when Nick Burrill (Grandville) singled on a 3-2 count to push home two runs.

The Jayhawks collected 11 hits in the contest, while Grand Rapids knocked out six.

Abdiel Gonzalez (Lake Orion) drove in a run with a single to get things started for the Jayhawks in the second inning.

Muskegon scored another run in the top of the fourth on a base hit by Sam Mitcham (Canada) before Grand Rapids got on the board to make it 2-1.

Sawyer Meeuwes (Big Rapids) was on the mound for the Jayhawks. The lefthander lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.

Aaron Sander (Fruitport), Luke LaCross (Traverse City), Jackson Williams (Grand Blanc) and Nathan Zinn (Columbus, Ohio) each collected two hits for the Jayhawks.
