COMSTOCK PARK – The Ludington Orioles baseball team hung on for a 10-7 victory over Catholic Central in the Lakes 8 Activities Conference at Lake Michigan Credit Union Ballpark at Comstock Park on Thursday.

The Orioles, who improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference, trailed 6-0 as their defense committed several stumbles.

“We played about as bad defensively as we could,” said Orioles’ head coach Evan Kroeze. “But, our guys responded. Wilson Gunsell and Jonny Weinert did a great job on the mound to minimize the damage and keep us in striking distance.

“Offensively, the guys just didn’t quit. Our two sophomores, Gage Jones and Evan McCarthy had two massive hits late in the game to give us the lead, and we didn’t look back from there.”

Weinert threw 2 2/3 innings and picked up the win. He did not allow a run or a hit, and struck out two.

Jones and McCarthy each drove in two runs.

Croix Klint took the loss in relief for the Crusaders. Sam Convertini went the first four innings and rang up six strike outs and allowed just two hits.

Leading hitters for the Crusaders were Convertini with two safeties, Dewey Modaff had a double and Braden Gustin had a double and two runs batted in.

The Crusaders fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
