BENZONIA– Mason County Central’s baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Benzie Central on Tuesday afternoon, 3-1 and 8-3 to open the spring season on the road.

Will Chye pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing one unearned run on just three hits while he struck out 11 and allowed no walks.

Simon Shimel led the Spartans (2-0) at the plate with two singles and a run batted in, while Brady Anes tripled and drove in a run and Chye singled and scored a run.

Jacob Johnson, Owen Shimel and Brayden Overmyer each had a single. Tyler Thurow picked up one RBI.

In the nightcap, Johnson took the mound and did not give up a run in three innings of work. He struck out four and walked two. Shimel pitched one inning of relief, giving up three runs (one unearned) on just two hits while he struck out two and walked two. The game ended in the fifth inning.

Chye had a big day at the plate in the nightcap, collecting three hits including a double, with two RBIs and scored two runs. Shimel had a single and three RBIs.

Johnson also collected a single and drove in two runs, while Gage Ruiz had a single and scored two runs. Raiden Keefer had a single, drove in a run and scored two runs. Overmyer also had a single and scored two runs.
