ZEELAND — Mona Shores’ girls softball team opened its OK Conference Green schedule Wednesday afternoon with a split of a doubleheader against Zeeland West, winning the opener 11-4 and dropping the nightcap 4-1.

In the first game, senior Elizabeth Savacool was dialed in at the plate, leading the Sailors with four hits, two of which were home runs.

Sailor juniors Mia Geoghan and Macey Spaniola and sophomore Brooklyn Graham each added two hits.

Winning pitcher was junior Kristen Hylland, who surrendered only three earned runs on four hits and ringing up 10 strike outs in a sterling performance.

The second game found the Sailors struggling at the plate as their bats went silent despite being able to hold Zeeland West to just four runs.

Savacool, though, produced three hits and freshman Amilia Pena added another.

Hylland again was in the pitcher’s circle for the Sailors and gave up just four hits and struck out five.
