FRUITPORT–Fruitport High School’s Cody Leonard has decided to pursue his football and academic career at the next level. Leonard has signed his national letter of intent to play on the defensive line, and continue his education, at Kalamazoo College.

Kalamazoo College is affiliated with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Hornets struggled last year finishing 1-9 and 0-6 in conference play. Leonard will strive to be an integral part in turning the football program around on the defensive end.

Last season, Leonard recorded 12 tackles and three tackles for loss. He also chipped in with one sack and one interception. Fruitport was 4-6 overall last season including a playoff berth and a district semifinal loss to the district champions Cadillac. The Trojans also finished 3-4 in OK Blue for a 5th place position in the conference.

Cody also thrives in the classroom as he was selected as an Academic All-State member by the MHFCA.

“Cody, ‘2-chain’, is an incredibly hard worker,” Fruitport coach Nate Smith said. “It has been a goal of his to play college football and he has been locked in on that goal for the past 4 years. He works his tail off in the weight room and in the classroom. Cody will do great things at Kalamazoo.”

Cody has a GPA of 3.57 at Fruitport High School and has selected Business as his major at Kalamazoo College. Cody is the son of Jeremy and Elisabeth Leonard.
