GRAND RAPIDS—The 4th ranked Mona Shores Sailors went on the road to 7th ranked Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills and split a Saturday doubleheader.
The Sailors took the opener behind another dominant pitching performance from Jaxon Huffman by a score of 5-4
Huffman allowed just one earned run while striking out 15. The lone earned run came on a wild pitch in the first inning. Huffman settled in and dominated the game improving his record to 8-0 on the season.
With the Sailors trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, Mark Konecny blasted his 7th home run of the season to left to tie the game.
With the score tied 1-1 in the 6th the Sailors broke the game open with a three run inning highlighted by bunts from Isaac Habitler and Bryson Belanger.
Mason Brunworth and Belanger each had two hits a piece to lead the Sailors. Aaron Piasecki had a hit and three stolen bases. Seven Sailors recorded at least one hit.
The Sailors dropped the nightcap despite two four run leads 16-6.
The Sailors jumped out to 4-0 and 5-1 leads, but a 9 run 4th inning for Kenowa Hills doomed the Sailors.
Trevor Cunningham suffered the loss on the mound for the Sailors.
Mason Brunworth added three more hits in game two to lead the Sailors offense. Konecny had two more of his own. And Javanni Johnson had two hits including a solo home run.
With the split, the Sailors now sit at 23-4 overall and remain 14-1 in the OK Conference- Green.
