BIG RAPIDS — Mason County Central’s girls soccer team lost a tough 3-1 decision to Big Rapids Crossroads Academy in overtime Thursday night in the district tournament at Big Rapids.  

The game was originally scheduled to be played at the Crossroads field, but it had flooded after all the rain and the officials ruled that the conditions were unplayable.  

Fortunately, both sides agreed to move the game to the Big Rapids High School field after a call to the public school resulted in its acceptance of the change.  

Bronwyn Stevens threatened to get the Lady Spartans on the board in the first half, getting three shots on frame. But none of them found the back of the net.  

Adrian Quigley also got off a shot in the first half for the Lady Spartans, but it also failed to get past the goalie.  

The Lady Spartans finally scored in the second half on an unassisted goal by Stevens for a 1-0 lead.  

Lily Stone made an attempt to increase the Lady Spartans’ lead to two goals early in the second half, but the Crossroads keeper was able to knock the shot away.

Crossroads Academy would tie things up with 13-minutes left in regulation scoring a goal. 

Gabby Jensen was in net for the Lady Spartans and had a great game, finishing with 22 saves. She made six saves in the overtime period.  

Crossroads then scored two goals in the overtime, one on a penalty kick, and sent the Lady Spartans home with their final loss on the season. to finish 0-14.  

“I was very proud of the girls’ effort tonight,” said Lady Spartans coach April Gajeski.

“The girls improved from the first game of the season to tonight.”
