PENTWATER — Mason County Central’s girls softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Pentwater, losing the opener 2-1 and winning the nightcap 3-2 on the road Monday afternoon.

In the first game Mikaylyn Kenney was in the circle for the Falcons and she threw six innings giving up just one hit and two walks, and rang up 11 strike outs.

Mandi Sayles’ bunt permitted Kenney to score from third to bring the Falcons into a 1-1 tie with the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth.

Kenney singled leading off the sixth, stole second and was wild pitched to third. Sayles reached first, was wild pitched to third herself and then scored the winning run when Marrisa Sayles put the ball in play.

Wren Nelson was the losing pitcher for the Spartans, although she also set down 11 batters on strikes and gave up only two hits in six innings.

Pentwater enjoyed a 1-0 lead after three innings in game two, but experienced trouble in the field, as errors opened the door for the Spartans to score three runs in the fourth inning.

Alex Luttrell paced the Spartans on offense, going 2-for-2 and driving in a run and also scoring a run herself. Maxie Green singled and scored a run, while Nelson contributed a triple with a RBI and a run.

Nelson picked up the win in the circle for the Spartans, pitching her way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning and benefiting from some stout defensive work highlighted by Riley Mast’s unassisted double play.

Kenney again was in the circle for the Falcons in the nightcap, and pitched another strong game, allowing just four hits, walking one and striking out 11 in five innings.

Mandi Sayles produced a double and Kenney added a single for the Falcons (7-3).

The Falcons are scheduled to host Manistee Catholic Central in a Western Michigan D League doubleheader Thursday.
