WHITEHALL — Whitehall’s girls softball team split a West Michigan Conference doubleheader with Montague at home Tuesday, winning the opener 18-13 while losing the nightcap 8-7.

In the opener’s high scoring affair, the Vikings scored five runs in the third inning paced by singles from Megan LeaTree and Evelyn Darke and a groundout by Illeana Hatcher.

Lucy Tucker was the winning pitcher for the Vikings, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing nine runs on 11 hits while striking out two. LeaTree threw 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Vikings pounded out 17 hits in the opener. LeaTree, Hailey Carnes, Darke, Alyssa Taylor, Hatcher and Onnyka Dempsey all had multiple hits. Taylor, Darke, Carnes and LeaTree had three hits apiece and Whitehall had six stolen bases, with Chase Baker swiping two.

Whitehall rallied from a five-run deficit after the second inning, but couldn’t get over the hump.

Tucker, Hatcher, Dempsey, Carnes, Darke came through with one RBI apiece to lead the rally.

LeaTree was in the circle for the Vikings and took the loss, throwing seven innings and allowing eight runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Whitehall had 10 hits for the game, with Hatcher leading the way going 3-for-3 including a home run. Carnes and Taylor also had multiple hits.
