NORTON SHORES –The Reeths-Puffer Rockets opened the boys soccer season with a 2-1 victory over the host Western Michigan Christian on  Wednesday night.

Holding a 1-1 tie at the half, both teams went back and forth as the heat began to take a toll. The Rockets found the advantage in the second half with the eventual game-winning goal. Liam Smith scored both goals for the Rockets.

The Warrior’s Isaac Luna sent a through ball to Ashton Leffring, who raced to the goal for the team’s only score.

“All-in-all that was a very good performance for the first game against a tough opponent,” WMC coach Ben Buursma said. “The boys did very well to put Reeths-Puffer on their heels for most of that first half. The team is making good progress, and this game gives us good insight into what areas need focus over the next several weeks.”

The Warriors outshot the Rockets 10-8.

Western Michigan Christian (0-1) will be at Holland Christian on Saturday to compete in the Kevin Witte Memorial Tournament.

Reeths-Puffer (1-0) travels to face Forest Hills Eastern on Saturday.
