KENT CITY–The Kent City varsity soccer team took on the Lions of Newaygo in a league matchup on Wednesday.

The Eagles came away with the 4-0 victory to clinch a share of the CSAA Bronze title, their first in school history.

Newaygo took the opening kickoff and applied immediate pressure to the Eagles. They made several advances to the attacking third, but could not find a shot on net.

Kent City bounced back quickly and controlled possession for a few minutes before senior Jaret Jaramillo dribbled through four Lion defenders and scored Kent City’s first goal.

Jaramillo drew a penalty kick a few minutes later and buried it into the back of the net to score his second goal of the night.

The Eagles continued to control possession for the rest of the half, but the Lion defense held firm and the score remained 2-0 at halftime.

Newaygo was unable to find an offensive rhythm through the rest of the game, but the defense prevented Kent City from finding their shots throughout most of the second half.

With 6 minutes remaining, junior Alfredo Bolanos-Colin lofted a cross into the box that senior Dylan Sutton headed in to make it 3-0 Eagles.

With just 8 seconds remaining, Bolanos-Colin’s cross found Sutton again, who volleyed it into the net. 4-0 Kent City.

Jaret Jaramillo and Dylan Sutton paced the Eagles with two goals apiece.

Alfredo Bolanos-Colin added two assists.

“As a former player in this program when we went years without winning a game, it’s truly incredible to be able to witness the successes this season,” said Kent City coach Pedro Sanchez. “I’m just so proud of all the guys on the team. This has been a long time coming and well-deserved.”

Kent City improved to 10-1-2 with the victory. They share the conference championship with Grant and Big Rapids.

Newaygo slipped to 5-7 and earned 4th in the CSAA Bronze.

Both teams will compete in the CSAA Bronze conference tournament next week.
