NEWAYGO — The Newaygo Lions celebrated homecoming in grand style on Friday night with a 25-12 victory over the Grant Tigers.

Lions’ quarterback Grant Harkness led the Lions’ attack with 77 yards rushing and 76 yards passing, including a touchdown. That touchdown came in the opening quarter when he hit Dylan Bazzett for a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Bazzett came right back and scored again, this time on defense. Bazzett pounced on a Tiger fumble in the end zone for a Lions’ score.

Grant lost the handle on the ball again and this time, Logan Klomp recovered.

Newaygo took a 17-0 lead after one quarter thanks to a late field goal by Josiah Long from 30 yards out.

In the second quarter, Ethan Reyburn scored on a 2-yard run and Harkness added the 2-point conversion and that extended the Lions’ lead to 25-0.

Grant scored two unanswered touchdowns to complete the evening’s scoring.

Remy Wells added 33 receiving yards and Bazzett had 32 for Newaygo.

Harkness also was solid on defense with eight tackles, including two for loss and two pass breakups. Chad Saucier had five tackles with three sacks. Bazzett had four tackles, two sacks and two pass break ups. Jordan Cook had four tackles with two sacks and two tackles for loss. Josiah Long had three interceptions and two pass breakups. Long also chipped in with an interception.

Newaygo travels to Reed City next week while Grant travels to Big Rapids.
