FRUITPORT–Fruitport junior Andrew Fielstra has been chosen as the LSJ defensive player of month in September by the Local Sports Journal.

Fielstra is the leading tackler for the Trojans with 50 tackles and that includes six for losses and two sacks. (These stats do not include results from the Spring Lake game).

At press time, Fruitport had an overall record of 4-2.

“Andrew is having one heck of a season for us,” Fruitport coach Nate Smith said. “He seems to get better and better each game. He is relentless in his preparation especially when it comes to watching film.

“The greatest growth that he’s had this season has come from his leadership ,” Smith said.

That preparation has rubbed off on his teammates.

“Because of his preparation and hard work his teammates have a ton of respect for him,” Smith said. “His teammates have a lot of trust in him and when he’s out on the field it’s like having another coach out there.

“He plays every down with everything he has,” Smith said. “When I watch our film after games, his energy and passion jumps off the screen. He flies around and embodies exactly what our defense should be like.”

Andrew is the son of Heather and Brent Fielstra.
