MUSKEGON–Oakridge junior Arturo Romero has a special skill when it comes to putting the soccer ball into the back of the net.

Through October 19, Romero has scored 35 goals assisted on three others in leading Oakridge to a 10-8-1 record.

Those numbers have earned Romero one of two Local Sports Journal player of the month for October.

“Arturo is a kid every coach wants on his team,” Oakridge coach Greg Fleener said. “He works very hard and practices like he plays games. He is a leader and captain, he is very vocal on and off the field.”

Because of injuries on the Eagle roster, Romero was moved back to midfield and that has limited his scoring chances. But, his level of play remains constant.

“The one thing that may outshine his soccer skills is his character,” Fleener said. “Teachers love having him in their class.”

Romero does have dreams of playing soccer at the next level.

“Arturo is not sure what he is going to do after he graduates in 2024, but he definitely wants to play soccer at the college level,” said Fleener.

Arturo is the son of Arturo Sr. and Karina. He has a 4.0 grade-point-average.
