NORTON SHORES – The Mona Shores volleyball team hosted the “Best of the West Tournament” on Saturday with some strong teams from the area participating.

The Sailors played competitively, but wrapped up with a record of 1-3 on the day.

The lone win came against Grand Rapids Catholic Central in two sets (25-22, 25-17).

The Sailors battled in each set of every match, but fell to Western Michigan Christian (21-25, 25-19, 13-15), Grand Haven (18-25, 25-14, 10-15) and Portage Central (25-23, 28-30, 13-15).

Ava Dunn had 41 kills and six aces, while Kyann Hellmann added 98 assists and 21 digs.

Jersey VanderWall and Grace Allen added 27 and 19 kills, respectively.

On defense, Izzy Sturtevant threw in 52 digs and Mallory Hogston had 19 digs.

Reeths-Puffer also had a hard day at the tournament and posted a record of 0-4.

Losses for the Rockets came at the hands of Hudsonville (9-25, 11-25), Zeeland East (18-25, 13-25), Forest Hills Eastern (25-22, 17-25, 9-15) and West Catholic (11-25, 19-25).

Sophia Hekkema had 16 digs, 15 kills and an ace, while Natalie Kunnen had nine kills, six digs and six blocks. 

Lauren Nelson had 12 digs, five kills and two aces. Sophia Corradin also contributed eight kills, three digs and an ace.

Mona Shores (19-9, 5-2) will kick off the OK Conference-Green Tournament on Tuesday at home against Wyoming.

Reeths-Puffer (13-14-2) will also open up the conference tournament at home on Tuesday.

Western Michigan Christian travels to Covenant Christian on Thursday.
