Mona Shores flexed its defensive muscle in a 34-6 thumping of Zeeland West on Friday.

The No. 5 ranked Sailors (Division 2) suffocated the No. 4 ranked Dux (Division 3) after letting Zeeland West into the end zone on its first possession for a 6-0 lead.

Mona Shores responded with 34 unanswered points as Jaylen Vinton hauled in the Sailors’ first score on a 35-yard touchdown pass from sophomore QB Jonathan Pittman.

Ke’Waun Farnum gave Mona Shores a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter on another deep pass from Pittman. The 6-1 signal caller connected with Farnum on a 32-yard strike into the end zone.

Pittman finished the night 9 of 11 passing for 103 yards and one interception, while gaining 58 yards on the ground.

Mona Shores continued to roll offensively in the second quarter, taking a 21-6 lead on a two-yard run by Dahmir Farnum. Vinton set up the key scoring drive with an interception that shut down the Dux’ hopes of finding the end zone before halftime.

The Sailors’ ground attack was nearly unstoppable as Dahmir Farnum ran two more times into the end zone in the second half to cap off scoring. Mona Shores finished with 426 total yards of offense, 323 arriving on the gournd.

Dahmir Farnum ripped off 172 yards rushing on 21 attempts with three trips into the end zone while brother Ke’Waun Farnum posted 66 yards rushing and had 58 yards receiving (1 TD) for the Sailors.

The Mona Shores defense shut down the potent Dux who were averaging 45 points a game entering the contest.  

The Sailors were led by a huge night from junior Hayden Terpstra with 14 tackles. Senior Brayton Conrad posted 12 tackles and Luke Emmons had 10.

Dahmir Farnum and Ja’Mari Taylor had seven tackles each.

Mona Shores is now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the O-K Green. The Sailors host Zeeland East on Friday, October 7 for their final home game of the regular season.
