MONTAGUE — Montague snapped a three-game losing streak with a 20-0 shutout of Fremont in a West Michigan Conference-Lakes football game at home Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats took a 13-0 lead at the half and then closed out the scoring with a touchdown in the third period.
Chase Gowell was a perfect 7-of-7 passing for 64 yards and a touchdown, an 8-yard scoring toss to Isaiah Atchinson … the only pass he caught Friday.
Owen Peterson had four catches for 41 yards and Paul Olson made two receptions for 15 yards.
Austin Cook led the Wildcats’ rushing attack with 20 carries for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Gowell ran for 20 yards on eight attempts. The Wildcats had 60 yards rushing as a team.
Rodney Brassfield was the defensive leader with 21 tackles, and three for loss. Silas Jancek was in on 15 stops and had one tackle for loss.
Brody Dietz followed him with 14 stops, and tweo for loss. Dylan Powers was in on 12 tackles. Michael Moore had seven tackles.
Fremont’s leading rusher was Justin Dirheimer with 168 yards on 38 carries for a 4.4-yard average per carry.
The Packers had 35 yards passing. Kyler DeKuiper completed 2-of-4 passes for 22 yards, while Talen Reichert-Slater was 4-of-14 for 13 yards.
Michael Romero caught two passes for 15 yards and Owen Hertel made one reception for 11 yards.
Defensive leaders for the Packers included Romero with nine tackles, Owen VandenBerg eight and Andrew Steger and Connor Pettis with seven apiece.
Montague improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Wildcats are on the road next week, playing conference rival Manistee.
Fremont dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the loss. The Packers host conference leader and undefeated Whitehall next week.
