COMSTOCK PARK –The Fruitport volleyball team escaped with a win in a highly contested Division 2 regional semifinal against Fremont on Tuesday evening.
The Trojans dropped the first set, but managed to hold off the Packers in the next three sets, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.
Sadie Haase posted 19 kills and four digs, while Gracelynn Olson had 38 assists, six digs and three aces.
Also, Ashton Olson chipped in 10 digs with two aces. Lauren Riedel had 21 digs and an ace.
Fruitport will be back at Comstock Park on Thursday for the regional finals against Grand Rapids West Catholic.
Finally the atrocious season has ended for Fremont. The blatant nepotism, after learning the coach was the father to a player on the team. Followed by favoritism. Where he would never bench some players. Barely bench others. While some girls sat the bench a lot, if not all of the time. Clearly, winning and individual statistics took precedent over the disregard of the mental exhaustion, frustration and well being of some players.
After all, consistency is key.
“Be Respectful. Excellent. Dependable.” is a banner hung in Fremont’s gym. A banner that exemplifies not just to the student body, but should to those with any involvement of FPS.
Moving forward, a new head and assistant coach should be sought after. Creating a team of unity. A team where every player is treated fairly and equally. A team that girls for years to come would want to join and be a part of.
