MANISTEE — Wren Nelson is a big factor inside for the Mason County Central girls basketball team, and she made her presence felt Tuesday night in the Spartans’ convincing 54-22 non-conference win over visiting Manistee on Tuesday night.

Nelson led all scorers in the game with 13 points, and all of them came inside the paint. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and gave the Chippewas all kinds of problems.

Mallory Miller, Evangeline Hradel and Ashlny McKay scored six points apiece for the Spartans, who were tipping off their season while the Chippewas had defeated Pine River, 43-38 on Monday night.

Miller was the Spartans’ major distributor with seven assists, while Grace Weinert dished out five. Miller also had two steals and four rebounds.

Allison Kelley was the Chippewas leading scorer with six points, while Grace Whitmer had four. Abby Robinson grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

The Spartans finished the first quarter with a 20-5 lead and never looked back, taking a 33-17 lead at the half and went into the fourth quarter leading by 21, 43-22.

Mason County Central is next scheduled to take the court Friday night for a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division contest at North Muskegon.

Now 1-1 for the season, the Chippewas hosts Oakridge in a WMC Lakes Division game on Friday.
