MORLEY-STANWOOD–The Grant Tigers girls basketball team fell to the Morley-Stanwood Mohawks in their season opener on Friday evening by a final score of 62-49.

The Mohawks jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter of play.

Grant cut the lead to 30-24 by the halftime break by outscoring Morley 14-11 in the second stanza.

The Mohawks held the upper hand in the third quarter 17-7 and 15-12 in the final eight minutes to hang on for the 13-point win.

Julie Ashbaugh led Grant with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“Morley-Stanwood’s inside presence was too much for us to overcome. They had a significant amount of points in the paint and offensive rebounds,” said Grant coach Josh Delamater.

“We battled after getting down by nearly 20 points in the first quarter to make the game competitive and had it under double digits in the fourth.”

“Our inexperience is going to be a major factor throughout the season. Four sophomores will be playing significant minutes and the speed and physicality of the game really got to them on Friday,” Delamater commented.

Grant (0-1) will be back in action on Monday evening when they travel to Whitehall in a non-league battle.
