The game, which was a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division contest, was played in Shelby.
“They pressed and played consistently aggressively,” Knuth added. “The first-quarter press caused turnovers that led to points we didn’t match. Credit goes to Kendall Zaveri, who shot 11-of-11 from the free throw line. We never seemed to get into a position to stop her without fouling.”
Shelby got off to a solid start, outscoring the Norsemen, 14-6 in the first quarter. But the Norsemen were outscored by only 12-10 in the second and the Tigers led, 26-16, at the half.
Neither team did much scoring in the second half, with the Tigers outscoring the Norsemen 14-12 in the second half.
“It’s exciting to see this group grow,” Shelby coach Sarah Wolting said. “Their confidence is building, and they are starting to rely on each other. Our guards gave North Muskegon some trouble tonight and our press converted into easy layups. I’m excited to see my team grow.”
Zaveri finished with 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and picked off five steals. Biloxi Lee had nine rebounds, while Aubrey Klotz had four assists. Molli Schultz scored 10 points.
Grace Philpot led the Norsemen with 12 points and Francine Vinson added nine points, hauled in five rebounds and had five blocks.
Kaylee Martin had five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Abbie Wiegers had five rebounds and two steals.
