GRAND HAVEN — Spencer Holmes knocked down four 3-point shots in the first quarter to help the tone for the Ludington boys basketball team.
 
The Orioles raced out to a 32-17 lead and rolled to a 92-49 victory over the Muskegon Heights Tigers.
 
It was the first game of the Lake Michigan Cup Tournament played at Grand Haven.
 
Ludington continued to dominate the Tigers in the second quarter, outscoring them, 20-12, in the period to gallop into the half with a hefty 52-29 cushion.
 
The Orioles forced 19 first-half turnovers which helped trigger their offensive output.
 
Point guard Gage Jones played a solid floor game for the Orioles, facilitating the offense and getting his teammates involved with eight assists.
 
Ludington had a 22-17 edge and went into the fourth holding a big 74-46 advantage. They finished with a 17-9 run in the fourth.
 
David Shillinger scored a game-high 23 points for the Orioles, while Holmes popped in 21 and Matthew Westhouse added 16.
 
Heights was paced by 21 points from Jaquan Matthews. Cartier Vance chipped in 15. Jonathan Moore contributed eight.
 
Ludington (6-0) returns to Grand Haven Friday afternoon for a game against Spring Lake (3-1). Game time is set for 4 p.m.
 
“Ludington is always good. I think Thad is a fantastic coach,” said Heights coach Delrecus Stewart.
 
“This is a special group that he has. They have a bunch of shooters, a big fella inside and Shilllinger is the straw that stirs the drink. They (Ludington really made us feel real uncomfortable tonight. “Big Country” (Matthew Westhouse – 6-10) is really skilled and you can tell he has really dedicated some time to his physical conditioning.
 
“When it is all said and done Ludington is going to be a really tough team to beat,” Stewart said.
 
Heights (0-2) returns to Grand Haven to face Petoskey at 1 p.m.
