BRETHREN — The winning streak in the Western Michigan D League is over for the Mason County Eastern girls basketball team, and rather handily, too, as the Cardinals suffered a 52-21 loss to Brethren on the road Friday night.

Eastern trailed the Bobcats by only three, 9-6 at the end of the first quarter. Brethren limited the Cardinals to just four points in the second period in being outscored, 16-4 and entered the half with a 25-10 deficit.

Brethren continued its dominance in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals, 18-5 and the Bobcats rolled into the fourth period with a 43-15 cushion.

“I thought the girls did a good job holding Elly Sexton and Maddy Biller to respectable point totals, but the outside shooting of Olivia Sexton and Alice Amstutz was too much to overcome,” said MCE head coach Jacob Smith.

“We got into some early foul trouble, and that changed our substitution rotation, and got us off schedule. We struggled to overcome that situation.”

Leading the Cardinals were Olivia Wing, Janessa Alvesteffer and Maria Gomez Jimenez with four points each.

Olivia Sexton and Amstutz each scored 12 points to lead Brethren (4-0, 3-0 WMD).

The Cardinals dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, and will be in action again Wednesday when they host Mesick.
