NEWAYGO –The Newaygo boys basketball team bounced back from a tough first half to take down Kent City on Friday evening.

The Lions held on thanks to missed free throws by Kent City in the final seconds to win, 38-36.

The Lions came out flat at first with only one point scored in the first quarter and 11 in the second quarter. The lack of production left them behind 22-12 at halftime.

The break reenergized the Lions, who went on to outscore the Eagles 13-4 in the third quarter. The scoring run brought them within one point of the Eagles, 26-25.

The spark continued into the fourth quarter where the Lions again held the advantage to take the lead and the win.

Bryce Decker led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds. Caris Nelson and Grant Harkness added 10 points and eight points, respectively.

The Eagles’ Jaret Jaramillo scored 12 points.

Newaygo (2-3, 2-0) travels to Evart on Monday.

Kent City (0-2, 0-1) will visit Blanchard Montabella on Wednesday.
