EVART  – The Newaygo boys basketball team used free throws down the stretch to edge out Evart on Monday evening.

The Lions topped Evart, 49-45.

The action was tight throughout the contest but the Lions found points from the line to put them on top.

Bryce Decker led Newaygo with 16 points and eight rebounds. Caris Nelson and Blake Kerr added 10 points and nine points respectively.

Newaygo (3-3, 2-0) will visit Ravenna on Tuesday, January 3rd.

GRAND RAPIDS –The Newaygo girls basketball team had a hard night in the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament on Monday evening. 

The Lions struggled and fell, 53-8.

“We have a young group that is seeing the sustained intensity that is needed to compete on the Varsity level against good competition,” said head coach Nathan Thomasma. 

“I’m seeing good things in spurts but we need to be more consistent if we want to play with and beat good teams.”

Newaygo (1-4, 1-2) will play in the final round of the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.
