BRETHREN — Outsized and playing its second game in two days, the Pentwater boys basketball team battled Brethren down to the wire Tuesday night.

Pentwater fell, 58-54 in a West Michigan D League game played at Brethren.

The Falcons came out firing on all cylinders against the Bobcats in what has become a great conference rivalry.

Pentwater found itself within reach of tying or winning the game in the final 35 seconds, but couldn’t connect after Will Werkema-Grondsma got a good look on a 3-point shot and missed. He tracked down the rebound and attempted a fadeaway jump shot for a triple and missed.

Missed free throws were the story of the game for the Falcons and that was especially true down the stretch. Pentwater made 9-of-21 free throws.

Leading the Falcons was Mikey Carlson with 18 points, five rebounds, five steals and one assist. Werkema-Grondsma added 10 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Trey Johnson scored six points, had five rebounds, five steals and one assist.

Pentwater (1-2, 1-1) travels to Marion for a conference game Thursday night.
