GRANT — Ludington’s boys basketball team opened the season Tuesday night with an 87-74 non-conference victory over Grant on the road.

But the first quarter found the Tigers ahead, 11-10. Ludington shrugged it off, outscoring Grant, 23-19 in the second period to take a 33-30 edge at the half.

Scoring was close in the second half as well, but the Orioles outscored the Tigers in each quarter, 26-18 in the third for a 59-48 lead going into the fourth period. The Orioles finished the game out with a 28-26 edge in the final eight minutes.

Ludington jumped out to a 14-point lead midway through the third quarter but could never pull away from a pesky Grant squad.

Grant pulled to within six midway through the fourth period, but got no closer.

David Shillinger scored 25 points and Spencer Holmes tossed in 20 for the Orioles, while Levi Laman added 11.

Austin Whitney led the Tigers with 16 points and Oakley Obenauf had 12.

Ludington begins competition in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division on Friday when the Orioles host the Fremont Packers at Hawley Gymnasium.

Grant, meanwhile, hosts Lakeview on Friday in a Central State Activities Conference game.
