PENTWATER — The shorthanded Pentwater Falcons simple ran out of gas on Friday night in a 49-28 loss to Big Rapids Crossroads.

Pentwater has been battling illness on its roster and left them far from full strength in the West Michigan D League contest.

Early on, the Falcons were hot, jumping on the visiting Cougars for a 7-0 lead. But they soon began to tire and that spelled their doom.

“This is the wrong team to tire out against,” said Pentwater coach Joe Gorton. “Big Rapids has some kids that can really push in transition. Once they started running, it was difficult to slow them down. I thought we did really well once we got our offense initiated and looked for our posts, as we had some size advantages. But, as has been the case all season, shots were not falling. We were just unable to convert offensively.”

The Falcons made 15-of-52 shots in the game.

Big Rapids answered the Falcons quick early burst with a 5-0 spurt of its own to close the gap to just two points, 7-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars then outscored the Falcons, 13-5 in the second period and carried an 18-12 lead into the half.

Pentwater’s offense continued to sputter in the third quarter and the Falcons were outscored, 13-4 and the Cougars took a 31-16 lead into the fourth. The Cougars had an 18-12 edge in the final eight minutes.

Jocelyn Richison led the Falcons with 12 points, while Mackenna Hasil added eight and eight rebounds. Audrey Kieda pulled down seven rebounds.

Pentwater (2-4, 2-3) travels to Buckley on Monday for a non-conference game.
