GRANT–The Grant Tigers girls basketball team pulled out a 52-42 win over in-county rival, the Newaygo Lions on Friday evening.

It was a struggle for Grant as Newaygo was within striking distance all night, and even held a second half lead, as the Tigers played without head basketball coach Josh Delamater who was serving a one game suspension for having been ejected from an earlier contest in the week against Montague.

Grant ended up with a 10-6 lead after the first quarter of action and extended that lead to 27-16 by the halftime break.

Newaygo had their best quarter of the year in the third period as outscored the Tigers 23-9 and went into the fourth quarter with a 39-36 lead looking for the upset win.

The Tigers defense and offense came up big in the final eight minutes of action.

Grant outscored Newaygo 16-3 in the fourth quarter to squash the Lions upset bid.

Julie Ashbaugh led Grant with a game high 18 points and 8 rebounds Jayci Hance tossed in 17 points to go along with six deflections and three steals. Jocee Pluene chipped in with 10 points.

Barbara Toth led Newaygo with 11 points and 5 rebounds.  Maria Riddering, Kija Westbrook and Grace Painter all had 7 points each.  Addison Goodin had 5 points and 9 rebounds.
